As Slow As Possible

As Slow As Possible is a work by the American composer John Cage, currently being performed in St. Burchardi church in Halberstadt, Germany. The piece is being played on a specially designed organ, and began with ‘a 17-month rest on September 5, 2001, Cage’s 89th birthday.’ It would be another 17 months before the first note sounded, on February 5, 2003. As Wikipedia notes, ‘The performance is scheduled to end on September 5, 2640’, making each scheduled note change a point of major interest (they’re listed on the Wikipedia page). In fact, the piece has been running for so long that the original web page already only exists on the Wayback Machine. ‘The last note change occurred on October 5, 2013. The next change will not occur until 2020.’ There’s a version of the piece available on CD, where the performers have managed to rush through it in around seventy minutes.
